Multiple umbilical cords in cats

Question
I realize that, just like humans, the mother is connected to the baby with an umbilical cord, but if a cat is pregnant with, say, six kittens, does she have six umbilical cords? I guess, that could possibly be true, but it seems unlikely.

Thank you, Carol.

Answer
Carol,

Yes, it is not only possible, but usual.  There is usually one placenta connected via an umbilical cord to each kitten.  which is why cat breeders are urged to count placentas.  However, there are sometimes two kittens born off the same placenta, i.e. two umbilical cords but one placenta.
