swollen breasts after weaning

Question
My cat has been weaned and now her breast are swollen, but she doesn't seem as though in pain.

Can you advise how to handle this to make her comfortable?  Also, do I need to wait before having her spayed?

A quick response would be appreciated, really concerned for her health.

Answer
Leigh,

I would suggest having a vet look at this cat just to make sure that she's not developing mastitis which is an infection in her mammary glands. If your kitty does not have mastitis or the beginning of it you can gently apply a warm washcloth to her belly a few times each day to ease her discomfort. If the vet gives the all clear then you'll need to wait two weeks for her milk to dry up before having her spayed. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me again at any time - I'm more than happy to help in any way that I can.

Kind regards,

Ali
