Question
What is a kennel shot for and when should a dog have one?

If a dog is (timewise) due for his shots, should he first be tested to see how much serum is left from the previous year's shot?

Answer
You can have vaccine titers done for Distemper and Parvovirus to see if there are antibodies sufficient for protection or just have the vaccine combination boostered.  Kennels require Distemper/Parvo combination vaccine as well as Kennel Cough (Bordetella) and Rabies vaccines.  Kennel cough is a respiratory illness that is spread through respiratory secretions and dogs coughing on one another.  If you are boarding your dog in a kennel or taking him to dog shows, obedience classes or the groomer, he should receive all 3 of the aforementioned vaccines.
