Cat Pee Stain and odor

Question
Hi Dr. Fry,

I need your help. My cat seems to be peeing on my carpet in one room only and she also pees in her litter box as well.  I think the peeing in ghd one room is her way of marking her territory. How can stop this behavior and how can I remove the stain and the odor that seems to be lingering no matter what I do to clean it.  She has been spade already and been checked for a urinary tract infection.  Please help.  Anything that you can suggest will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Most likely the urinating outside the box is due to her dis-satisfaction with the box's cleanliness, location, type or litter OR she has underlying anxiety.  The first thing I would recommend is buy a brand new box and put it in the spot she is going.  Use CAT ATTRACT litter in that box.  Make sure to scoop the boxes out every day and wash them weekly with hot soapy water.  Also, purchase FELIWAY or Comfort Zone diffusers to plug into the house to help reduce any stress or anxiety.  Make sure to reward her and praise her when she uses the box.  Also spend at least 15 minutes a day playing with her.  If she still doesn't use her box, then anti-anxiety medication is in order.

As far as the smell, you can try vinegar and baking soda, Nature's Miracle or Equalizer.  In many cases if the smell is lingering, it is because it is in the carpet pad and you may need to pull up the carpets.
