Question
QUESTION: My daughter's dog was diagnosed with type II parvo or a "mutant" strand of parvo.  We are located in the Abilene, TX area and have been told there have been a number of cases reported.  How is this different from "type I" parvo?  Could this have been caused by a bad vaccine?  Thanks for any answers you may have for us!
(Her dog survived and returned home today!)

ANSWER: Hello:  Glad that her dog did make it!

*** type 2C was found in Italy about 7 years ago.  It hits all ages and will hit a dog that is only a few days "over-due" for the parvo shots.
Here is a little info on it: Parvo type 2 C

Here are the basics in a nutshell on Parvo virus 2C
1-kills faster

2-easier to contract /(side walks and dog parks)

3-difficult to diagnosis with a Snap Test**** ( not found in a poop test)***

4-affects adult dogs behind on their vaccines in addition to puppies

5-must be treated early in the disease and aggressively

6-current vaccines do not always protect against it.

Anyway, just another thing we need to worry about!  Right?

Best Wishes!

QUESTION: The dog was up to date on her parvo shots.  Actually, she'd had the shots LONG before she contracted this parvo.
The vet tested the blood in her poop but your notes state it can't be detected by a "poop" test.  I guess we're wondering if the diagnosis was correct.....Thanks again for your information!

Answer
Hi again:  From what I understand there is a Type 2 and a Type 2C...
We could be talking about 2 different things.... Sorry, there is a bunch of info on this new Type C.

Just do a search on the mutant parvo and the  type 2 c -  You will get many links on the subject.

Glad the dog is doing well!!!
