Cat has a bad smell!

Question
My cat is about 2 1/2 years old.  She is a polydactyl with thumbs.  Recently I noticed a smell coming from her.  When she is in my lap I can smell it.  It smells like feces.  She has excellent grooming habits, and I dont know if it is coming from her mouth, but when I smell the middle of her body, it is there too.  She has ear mites that we are trying to control with drops.  She is an inside and outside cat.  She comes and goes as she pleases and appears healthy otherwise.  Could this be the ear mites or something else?

Answer
While cats do have excellent grooming habits she might have some odor coming from her ears or her anal glands. Cats have them just like dogs and they can express them when they are startled as well as when they have a bowel movement, which is when they are normally expressed.

She might also have some moist areas between her toes, so you might want to look at them and see if the are moist and have some discharge between them.

Ear mites can be cleared up with two injections of Ivermectin given by the vet. Drops take forever and don't seem to work well, unless they are Ivermectin drops. You might want to clean her ears out well with some cotton balls too to see if the smell is from there.

Otherwise, lift up her tail and look to see if she has some fecal matter on her tail, her feathers of her tail or has some anal gland leakage going on.

If all else fails, take her into the vets and ask him.
