Question
QUESTION: sir,my 3month old german shepherd fell off from the 2nd floor stair around 24hrs back.initially he was in shock.there are not many good doctors at my place so initially when he was in shock and was showing no sign of life(probably he fainted) we kept him on oxygen.after which he started showin signs of recovery.more than anything,i think he was in shock.he was also given an injection of analgesic and antibiotic.now in past 24 hrs he has been eating properly,is active,is having normal bowel movements and is also not limping or showing any sign of fracture or injury when we pressed his whole body to see whether there is pain in any specific area.he is also out of shock.the only cause of worry is that he is breathing bit heavily and is having a very wet nose.he also has this habit of throwing water out of his water bowl and then sleepin on the water to keep him cool and so his chest is perpetually all the time wet.what can be the possible reason for his heavy breathing.is it because of cold as he is all the time soaked in water or there is some other problem?

ANSWER: I am a bit confused by this question. How long has the dog been breathing heavy? If he has been doing this water thing for a while, has he been breathing heavy the whole time? Did you notice this before?
If he is eating and seems find otherwise I would worry about the stair incident. Where did you get oxygen and an analgesic injection if there are not many doctors at your place? What place are we talking about, a veterinary hospital?

If his lungs sound clear or are clear on xrays then I would not worry about his getting wet. Heavy breathing could be from many things and one of them is a bad heart. If he hasn't had one already, you need to get this dog's chest x-rayed and have his heart looked at and listened to.

By the way I am not a sir nor am I a vet. If you want to ask a vet then re-post this to one of the veterinarians in here. I am a Registered Veterinary Technician.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: sir,my parents are doctors so the  moment he fell off stairs, they kept him on oxygen.since we dont have vet in owr town,my father called up a vet in other city who gave a telephonic advice to give analgesic injection and antibiotic.regarding that water thing,he has been doin it from day 1 but he has a mild heavy breathing since yesterday though it has subsided a lot since before.he is doing all other activities normally...eating,drinking,playing,toilet etc.sir one question, you said that you are not a vet but a registered veterinary technician...what does that mean?

Answer
My name is Jana, I am a female and RVT is the person that does all of the work in the vet hospital that the vet doesn't do. We do the lab work, x-rays, dental procedures, wound prep, surgery prep, IVs, catheters, etc.etc.

Most people don't even know we exist. I have 30 yrs experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician. You can find out more about us at NAVTA.com.
I really don't know what an antibiotic injection would do for shock but I am glad your puppy is better. We normally give fluids and supportive care for shock.
