Question
I got my male husky/wolf hybrid about a year ago. He was perfecty fine until a few months ago. he started losing hair on his spine at first, but now the hair on his back has regrown and hasnt fell out again, but now he has almost no hair on his belly! its just tough skin. its not a hot spot and there are no fleas on him! i keep him bathed and my house and yard flea sprayed and i have no other pets! i do live in Hawaii and i thought maybe it was because its too hot for him here, but he was born here and he is almost 3 years old now. but he looks terrible and he used to be beautiful! is there anything i can give him to make his hair come back and to keep him from scratching? and what could the cause of this be?

Answer
You need to take a magnifying glass and look closely at the skin where there is no hair.  Can you see broken hair shafts at the level of the skin?  Is there hair present in the skin or not?  If the dog is itchy, he will chew or rub off the hairs and you will see them with the magnifying glass.  If there are absolutely no hairs in the skin that you can see, then there is probably some type of hormonal problem affecting the growth of hairs in the hair follicles.  Your vet can help you determine which of these conditions this might be.
