Question
I am new to saltwater aquarium. I am trying to setup a community tank with a mixture of different type of saltwater fish, Live rocks and Coral. Currently I have a 45 gallon tank with undergravel filter powered by air and power head. My question is do I still need a protein skimmer or wet/dry filter or do I need both? Which will better for me? Thank you.

Answer
Alan,

I would not bother with the underground filter.  Just use the powerhead for water movement. Live rock and coral need good water movement this is where your power head will come in. A protein skimmer is a must.  This item is great for live rock and reef set-ups.
CPR makes a great protein skimmer. I have two one is my 50 gallon and one in my 75 gallon.  They create better water conditions by skimming all organic residue.

The wet dry filter in my opinion is good but you could get away with a strong hang on filter like an Aqua clear 70 or 110 they process between 300-428 gallons per hour and they run about 24-37 dollars at doctors foster and smith.
I would buy the skimmer and Aqua clear 70 or 110.  I have the 70 in my 50 gallon and the 110 in my 75. These filters due the job.

Good luck Todd
