Protein Skimmer Overflow

Question
I have a Bak-Pak skimmer and it has overflowed twice. Neither time the collection cup was full. The first time the floor was wet my not soaking and it had quit by the time I found it, I think because of the water level in the tank. It did it again tonight and once again, I did not get to see it overflowing but the carpet was wet. there were drips on the bottom of the skimmer and the cord and on the ledge behind the tank underneath the skimmer.  My friend suggested it was because I put some filter medium on the side where the output is. I did that because when I when online to the Cyclone website, it showed that they designed it so that it could be run with a sponge there. I did not have the sponge so I used some white poly filter medium. I removed it tonight after it is overflowed again. Do you have any suggestions. Because of this problem, I cannot leave it running as you suggested. I am afraid I am going to keep doing this till I ruin my carpet. Thanks for the input.

Answer
Hi Debbie. Do you know exactly where on the skimmer it is leaking from? If the chamber where the bio bale goes is packed too tightly this could cause it to overflow however you may want to check the o rings and washers to make sure that it is not leaking from another point. If both times this has happened the filter fiber was in there try running it without it to see if that was the problem. Place a small bucket or plastic container directly under it so your carpet does not get soaked again but continue to run it. I have honestly never heard of any complaints with this brand of skimmer and when used correctly is a very efficient filter.
