Yes, you can run carbon in a refugium. You can run the carbon in a filter sack/sock, or in a reactor. Both work ok. I would not use carbon unless you are unhappy or need or want something to improve.
(clarity, smell??)
Also, i highly reccomend a DSB, (deep sand bed). I think this a great way to deal with nutrients, and contaminants naturally...
I have one in my fuge, and withintwo to three months, my nitrates that usually averaged above 10, are now, difficult to measure...
