Question
Cleaned tank & hoses...unable to create suction so fluval works.

Answer
Hi Sandy,

This is a common problem with these types of filters because they use gravity to help create the starting suction point.  However, with a little patience, I'm confident that you should be able to get the water to once again flow through your Fluval Canister Filter.

Most models are equipment with shut-off valves, whether they are located on top the unit or in-line with both hoses.

With both hose line in the aquarium do the following below:

To help get the flow started again, unplug the unit, then you would want to completely turn off the return water hose line valve, this is the hose line that returns water back to the aquarium after it has traveled through the filter media inside the filter...

You do want to fully open the water suction flow line, which typically will have the plastic safety suction screen on the end, most have the shut-off ball valve inside. While keeping this valve in the fully open position, plug the unit back in. Give it a minute, this will fill the hose line to capacity with water, follow by opening the return hose line valve all the way, this should once again get the water flowing.

Also make sure that you do not have any loops or bends in the hose lines, they need to be for the most part straight up and down, from the tank to canister filter, without any bends or loops in them.

Email me back, and let me know if this helps, I'm curious to know if you get it started up again.

Good luck in all your aquarium endeavors!

Regards,
Dave
