Foam on top of the water

Question
Hi, I just set up my new aquarium (29gal) and I've been running it for about two days now to get the enviornment going. The air bubbles from the air pump in the tank have been staying on the top of the water though and not disapating very quickly. Because of this a large buildup of foam is always on top of the water. Is this normal because I don't see that happen in any other tank? Or is it because my tank is new? Thanks

Answer
Hello,

You're right. This isn't common to most tanks. Is it foam or bubbles? Foam is more frothy, and lasts longer. Bubbles will pop eventually and don't look fluffy. Bubbles are okay. Foam is unusual and I'm not sure what is causing them in your tank.

You should check levels of nitrites and ammonia. It may also be a good idea to invest in something to put in your filter that removes phosphates. I use a product called Green-X that works great.

You should scoop the foam off the top of the tank and maybe change about 10% of the water as well. You should refrain from adding fish until the foam population is under control.

If after you have done all this, and the foam is persistant, feel free to contact me again.

I hope this helps.

Good-luck,
From Stephanie
