New Beta

Question
We are new to the fish stuff and just got our  year old a beta fish.  We have a small tank for him and when we bought him, we were told very little about caring for him.  I used tap water to fill his tank 4 days ago and he seems to be fine.  How often should I change his water and should I use a conditioner with the tap water?  We are getting a gold fish today for a separate tank (told to do this).  Its a 2 gallon tank with a filter we filled and added conditioner to 4 days ago as well.  Any suggestions on anything else to prepare for our new goldfish, our son is so excited to finally have pets! Thanks a million, Kristen

Answer
Hi Kristen;

I hope I'm not too late! Don't get a goldfish for the 2 gallon! It's only big enough for a betta. Goldfish are very messy guys that get very large (6 to 8 inches) so they need 10 gallons per fish to be healthy. Here is a web page about it;

Change your betta's water once a week and use water conditioner every time. Here is a web page with more about betta care;

I hope all goes well...
