QuestionQUESTION: Hello,
I recently bought a new aquarium and added 3 Lyretail mollies (2 yellow + 1 white) after checking all the water parameters etc.
When ever i feed the fish , i see that they turn very violent against each other.
It almost looks like one might get killed in the run.
Please suggest what i can do.
i thought that mollies are peaceful community fish.
ANSWER: Hi Arun,
For some reason, mollies tend to be aggressive to one another at times. Your three could be all males too, which fight a lot--its hard to keep more than 1 male molly per tank. Or it may be male courting a female also.
It may help if there is a large group of mollies versus just 3. Like if you had say, 5-6 mollies with 1 male in the group that may slow things down a little. But that's just how mollies behave it seems in my experience. They tend to jostle and chase each-other around a lot. Usually it doesn't do them any harm but you always want to watch for any fish that may be being severely bullied.
Sorry, I know this is bad news... :(
But I hope this helps, best of luck!

QUESTION: Hello Karen,
I have only 3 mollies becoz mine is a new tank and i heard that i need to have less fish to start the cycle for about 4weeks.
I saw that the one fish which was bullied (a smaller one) is now the most fierce (after 3days). Now its bullying the other bigger ones a lot.
Would you recommend me to return the small one?
AnswerHi,
Well, you're right about the new tank not being able to support that many fish yet until it cycles.
It's a very common problem you have though, with your aggressive mollies. And it could be that you have all males or two males fighting over 1 female. I think you'll have to just wait it out. If the aggressive fish gets way too bad then it would probably be best to remove the most that fish. Usually a group of mollies lessens the aggression from one individual bully fish. Also, if the aquarium is too small this can always increase fish aggression.
I really hope this helps as always,
Karen~
