New USED tank

Question
We recently purchased a USED 29 or 30 gal. tank.  We cannot tell what type of fish it was used for. We currently have a 10 gal tank w/one gold fish.  We have had him for about 2 years now and it has grown from 1 1/2 inch to about 8 inches.

We would like to move the fish to the new tank but want to make certain we do not risk harm to the fish or his environment.  We currently just have regular tap water (which is treated) in our tank.  No other additives.

My real question is, are there special precautions we should take to clean the new tank.  Especially if it was a salt water tank previously.

Thanks much for your help.

Answer
Hi Rita,
Just be sure to only clean the tank with water and no other cleaners. Use an algae scrub pad if it has any hard to remove mineral deposits. Be sure to give the tank time to cycle since goldfish are very dirty fish and if the tank isn't given enough time to cycle it could cause your goldfish to get really sick from the ammonia build up.

Also, I want to compliment you on raising a goldfish to that size. I am sure he is a beautiful fish.

If you have any more questions feel free to write back.

Best of luck,
Karen
