fresh water fish same as beta

Question
We have had a Betta fish. It died of couriosity.  It got stuck in a shell and couldn't get out.  We have other pets. We need a fish that does not need bubbles.  No filter.  Our tank is just a small circular oval shaped bowl and it is in our bathroom since it is the warmest room in the house.  I want to change the water often.  I want to take care of a fish.

My question to you is  "What other fish can I purchase that has the same surroundings as a Betta?  What other freshwater fish can survive in a tank without air bubbles and no filter???"  What other fish do you recommend.

Answer
Hi Monika;

I'm so sorry you lost your betta. There really aren't any other fish that can stay healthy in a small space with no filter. Bettas are equipped to live that way because of a specialized "lung" called a "labyrinth". They can live in very low oxygen conditions because of it. Some people will tell you that goldfish and guppies can live in the same type of container. It simply isn't true. Goldfish get far too big and guppies and goldfish both need good filtration.

You could try again with another betta, but remove the deadly shell and if you have some, any other shells, coral, limestone or marble. These types of things really should not be used as decorations in freshwater tanks. They slowly dissolve over time and give off minerals that raise hardness and pH. This is desirable in saltwater aquariums, but not in freshwater. Use lava rock, shale, or any other type of rock decor sold in fish stores intended for freshwater tanks. Also be sure to have a cover on the bowl. Some bettas will jump out. Provide a tiny air hole though so it can still get oxygen in the air space.

I hope it goes better next time...
