This is a very helpful site that has a lot of good information.

You can also register at this site for a very helpful E-book that will give you all the info you need on keeping aquariums.

Assuming that you have everything you need to run an aquarium (stand, tank, filter, air pump, canopy, heater, light and gravel or other substrate) then the setup is simple.  First, position the tank on the stand (or other surface, keeping in mind a 55g will weight about 600lbs).  Second, wash your gravel thoroughly to rid it of dust that will cloud your tank.  The best way is to place the gravel in a bucket and run water through it until the water runs clear.  Third, add the gravel to your tank, you should have 1-2 inches of gravel in the bottom of the tank.  Also add any ornament you have now so you can control their placement.  Fourth, Fill your tank with clean water from you tap (use bucket or a python system, not a garden hose).  Fifth, set up your filter, heater and aeration.  Sixth, you will need to let your tank cycle.  You can choose to cycle with fish (usually hardy fish like zebra danios) but general it is preferred to do a fishless cycle.  Read more here.

If you don't have a test kit, you can get your water tested at your local fish store.  Seventh, add fish.  The fish you add is up to you.  If this is your fish tank I recommend beginner fish like guppies, mollies, platies and swords.  Research the fish before you buy them to gain insight as to whether they are the fish that are best for you and to check compatibility and adult size (you don't want a fish that will get bigger then your tank will hold).
Good Luck and I hope this answer helps you.
