Angel fish disease

Question
I have two angel fish in a 20 gallon tank with a carbon type filter. I change the water about everyother week, replacing about 20 to 50% of the water. One of the fish has a cloudy growth on the outside of his eye. I just cleaned the tank on Friday and I noticed his eye today. His fins are also very tattered, that is how I got him from a friend.  The other eye had the same problem about a month ago and I used Fungus Cure.  It seemed to help but the eye never fully recovered, it has a white blotch in it.  I am wondering what it is that he has and how can I cure it? I am also concerned because the other angel fish keeps attacking him and poking the bad eye with her mouth.  Any advice or suggestions would be great.  I don't want to loose him.

Answer
Hi Erin;

They need to be separated for sure. The stress of being constantly bullied is weakening the sick one's immune system. A second tank of at least 20 gallons would be the best but you can get aquarium dividers at most fish stores. They can each have their own space without having two tanks that way. A 20 gallon is too small for both of them anyway but for now a divider would at least help. Once he has some peace and can rest, the medicine has a better chance of healing infection. Make more frequent water changes for a while too. A 25% change twice a week will be very helpful in getting him well faster and making him stronger.

Angels are in a family of aggressive fish known as "cichlids". They are territorial and can be aggressive. The dominant fish just wants all the space to itself and is trying to chase the weaker one away. It's quite normal for angelfish, in spite their deceiving name. ;-)
