goldfish and algae eaters

Question
I read the question by doug someone- it sort of answered my question, still..
We keep goldfish in our outdoor pond in the summer months, but bring them in in fall/winter. For years that was wonderful, then we had an algea issue, so I got an algea eater... it died. The store clerk said it was because  of the cool water in the tank, so I got a heater. After than. whenever we bring in the fish, they die within a month. I am so tired of it ! I really cannot stand to see them die, and I think the only thing different is the water temp.We have a filter- its a 30 gallon tank, but they still die. Do I ditch the algea eater ( find a home for him) and try again ? He is a beautiful fish, btu I miss the goldfish !
Thanks !

Answer
Hi Joanie:  What kind of algae eater do you have???? the goldfish should live just fine in the pond over the winter with a few additions to the pond.  1) move the filter box to about 1 foot below the surface of the pond.  If you live in an area where the pond may freeze over a small pump that breaks the surface of the water will prevent the pond from freezing over.  You can also make a plastic tent for the pond which will keep the water slightly warmer.  The algae eater will need to come inside for the winter and go out in late may to the pond.  You can also use the winter and the indoor aquarium to grow smaller koi or goldfish for the pond too.  If you need additional information about winterizing your pond just let me know... dave
