You perfectly described the same thing I have going in my 55gal. I also have a lava rock inside which struck odd to me, as of now I am in the process of removing all things inside and out and doing a 3 week long cleaning to not harm my fish which is a red devil, Who does not appear sick in anyway tome at all, but your post scared me into cleaning because I couldnt bare to lose him.
