Is it whitespot/Ich?

Question
Hello

I have a 30 gallon tropical tank with a mixture of guppies, swordtails, gourami's and a catfish.  I've noticed over the last week or so what I can only describe as hair like things on the pebbles in the bottom of the tank and I've come home tonight to find loads of white parasites all over the glass.  None of the fish seem affected.  Is this white spot or Ich? If so what would you recommend as treatment I've increased the water temperature but this only speeds up the parasite life cycle I know some treatments are harmful to Catfish??

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

If the 'parasite' is just on the glass, and is not affecting the fish, it is definitely NOT Ich. Instead, it's actually Planaria, a type of organism that does NOT harm fish or plants whatsoever. they are just more of an eyesore than a problem.

They are caused by poor water quality/lack of maintenance.

They can't harm fish, but if you want to get rid of them, just change 20% of the water every day, with a gravel vacuuming. Do this until they are all gone. Do NOT use any medication on them, as it will not work, and may harm your fish. Don't raise the temperature, because it won't do anything except stress the fish.

Good Luck, and Happy fishkeeping!
