Pregnant platy behavior

Question
My female platy is pregnant and has recently been spending a lot of time at the bottom of the tank - more or less treading water between the rocks and close to plants. She is in a community tank, but there is also a male platy who has taken a great interest in her. She seems very upset whenever he or any of the other community dwellers gets too close. Is her behavior a sign she should be isolated into the breeding tank?

Thanks very much in anticipation of your response.

Answer
Hi Fran

I wouldn't put her in a breeding net. Breeding nets are where you should put the fry when she gives birth. If you isolate her to a breeding net, she may become startled and abort the birth. Create some hiding places for her. Keep an eye on the tank for the fry and immediately put them in the breeding net when you see them or they may not survive.

Hope this helps, good luck!
