Question
Hi Chris, so my tank with a huge pacu and pagasius was in mid cycle, when i stupidly cleaned gravel and filters, I have also added anti-clouding stuff.. I have been testing water ph and ammonia, which was in mid range so i put a reducer/detoxifier in called ammonia clear and also used a nitrate reducer.. Anyways, the tank got much cloudier as the nitrogen cycle probably started again.. Does this mean it will take twice as long to cycle or be twice as toxic for the fish? They seem fine and i have been doing weekly 15% water changes., I have a big canister filter and also another external with carbon filter and bio wheel. ITs a 135 gallon tank. Any products or reccomendations for getting though this? thanks!

Answer
Hi Dayton, I am not the expert you asked but this was forwarded to me somehow.  I have no idea when you asked this question either.  So if it is a late response, I am very sorry.

When you cycle a tank you have to use the least amount of medications as possible.  Liquids that modify pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate do not work.  Your reducer and detoxifier just makes it no-readable to tests but is still there in the tank.  If your tank is currently in cycle, you should not have any nitrate readings.  There are 2 types of bacteria necessary to growing during cycling.  The ammonia-to-nitrite converting bacteria and the nitrite-to-nitrate converting bacteria.  When you have signs of nitrate it means your tank has almost finished cycling or is finished.  Your tank must have gotten cloudy because you disrupted the cycle by killing the beneficial bacteria with meds and caused a mini cycle.  Mini cycles can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks to finish.  During a cycle, if one of the 3 nitrogen levels get too high, you must do water changes to reduce it.  Try not to reduce it with medications.  My advice to you is, just keep doing 20-30% water changes a week to reduce nitrogen levels until it has finished cycling and when it has finished you can fall back to 15%-20% water changes weekly.
