125 gallon freshwater tank setup

Question
I have a 125 gallon acrylic tank with two overflows in the back corners.  There's also has what looks like two power heads for the return on the back center.  I also have a wet/dry filter and a refugium/filter with miracle mud.  My question is should I use one overflow for each fitler then back to the main tank or should I use only one overflow that goes to the wet/dry then to the refugium then back the main tank.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Mando,

My advice is to run some pipe from the wet dry to the refugium so the water goes across it and back up to the tank.  Usually the wet/cry and the fuge will both have piping outlets.  You can elevate the wet/dry and have it exit to the fuge through the portal where the return would normally go, or you could forego the wet/dry all the way.  I have little faith in wet/dry filters with saltwater, as the bioballs become very toxic after awhile.  They will have so many bacteria that they will require regular, monthly cleaning.

Connect the dual overflows at a Y and have one single drain.  Only enough water will drain out as it refills.

Put a substantial return pump on that tank.  You will want heavy flow. :)

Miracle Mud is THE STUFF.  It's awesome and will nutrify your system and breakdown bad stuff appropriately.

If this isn't clear enough directions, let me know and I will gladly write them better for you.

Happy fish-keeping.
