Question
Hi Chris:
Thanks for your quick response.  My question is:  how long should I have her on the Maracyn 2?  How will I know she's finished healing?  When would be a good time to return her to the big tank?  The hospital tank is cloudy even with frequent water changes and I wonder if the big tank has more oxygen & would be better for her but then have to worry about her getting too much food as I can't separate her from the other 2 for feeding. Looking forward to your reply! Thanks so much!

progress has been dramatic!  Thank you so much!  I have used Maracyn 2 for 6 days now plus have been changing the H2O every other day and adding salt, Prime, Stress Zyme and Cycle and she is eating and pooping.  However, she swims wierdly, sometimes, like moonwalking, backwards and upside down her big tail fin is still quite droopy, but she always pulls out of it and swims away and has good energy again.  Is this ok?  And when can I stop the medication and return her to the big tank?  I so appreciate your good advice!  I understand these fish can live for up to or more than 10 years!  I want to take really good care these babes!

Question -
I have 3 fish in a 37 gal. tank with excellent filtration, chemistry, etc. except I think I was over feeding and cleaning only 1x mo.  My other 2 fish are fine.  But Natasha has been lying on the bottom, bloated, bug-eyed and her tail fin looks so droopy that she's having trouble swimming correctly.  I have isolated her in a 5 gal. tank and am withholding food for 24hrs so far.  I've had them almost 2 years.  Is there anything more I can do for her?  What is wrong?

Hi Rebecca;

It sounds like an internal infection of some kind. You might try some special antibiotics that will get inside of her body where infection is, instead of treating the outside like most others do. There are 2 that I know of; "Kanacyn" by Aquatronics and "Maracyn 2" by Mardel. Use according to the package instructions. You will need to change water in her small tank often, perhaps even daily.

You should also add a tiny bit of epsom salts to her tank. Use 1/8 teaspoon per 5 gallons. This will help draw the fluids out of her and relieve the pressure that causes the bloating.

There is no guarantee that she will recover, but the recommendations I gave would give her the best chance she has right now.

Hi Rebecca;

Great! Keep doing what you are doing and hopefully there will be a complete recovery. It sounds like she just needs to finish healing.

Keep up the good work!

Hi Rebecca;

If I remember correctly, Maracyn 2 can be given in 2 courses. I think it takes 2 weeks? Once she is done with those 2 courses she can go back to the other tank. If she isn't going to be picked on by the others of course. The medicine is the only other reason to keep her isolated. It's best not to treat the main tank itself.

I think the cloudiness is from the medicine. It makes the water pretty yucky. Just keep it as clean as possible and it should work out just fine.
