Pregnant Fish???

Question
I have two scissortail fish. I am not sure of their exact breed other than that. They are slightly bigger than my neon tetras, gold in front with black on the rear, and a forked tail. I believe one may be pregnant. Do you know if this is a live bearing or egg producing species? Also, I was wondering what the approximate gestation would be if the fish is pregnant.

Answer
Hi Candis;

Is this your fish?;

If so, they are egglayers. The chubby one is probably a female. To breed them you will need a spawning tank. Once the parents spawn you will have to remove them from the tank in order for the eggs and then the hatched babies to survive. Fish like these have no parental instincts so they will eat the eggs and babies if given the chance. In a separate tank they can grow big enough to fend for themselves eventually. They are not easy to raise however. The eggs and newly hatched fry are sensitive to water conditions.

You can do an internet search on their scientific name "Rasbora trilineata" for more info on these pretty little fish.

Have fun!
