Tank space

Question
Hi Chris,

I did some internet research on the life span of a Jack Dempsey
cichlid and the general consensus seemed to be that they live for
about eight to ten years, although I saw a few other numbers -
one person said they lived for about fifteen. What is the normal
lifespan for a cichlid?

Also, how much space do they need? The cichlid is about eight
inches long, and the pleco is close to the same - these are fairly
large fish. They don't do a lot of moving around, but I'm
concerned that this space may be cramping for them. What size
tank would you recommend?

As far as my fish and tank setup, it hasn't changed: one Jack
Dempsey cichlid and one pleco, in a 20 gallon tank (set up for
about two years now, charcoal filter system, no unusual water
chemistry).

Thanks, as always, for your help!

- Chris

Answer
Hi Chris;

I think they would be happier in a 40 gallon or larger. The plecostamus can get up to 12 inches if it's the regular type. The Dempsey can get up to 10 inches. That's quite a lot of fish for 20. They are both kinda messy too.

The average lifespan for a Dempsey is about 10 years. You will hear of some living upwards of 15 years. But, just like people living to be 100, it happens, but isn't common.
