Poop-eating fish?

Question
I have a delicate question.  Are there any fish that work for freshwater aquariums that eat fish poop?  I would think they'd help the biological filtering if they exist.

Answer
Hi Aaron;

Not a delicate issue really. Just biological. There aren't any fish that eat "poop" that I know of. I guess if there was a lot of undigested material in the feces of other tank mates, a scavenger might be interested in checking it out. But, that would be from an overfeeding problem. The remedy is to cut back on food so that the fish only receive what they need in order to digest it properly.

Remember too that scavengers and bottom feeders make plenty of their own poo too. So, even if they did eat others' wastes they still have to put it back out. That poo too would be "processed" times two. (Ha!) But, in my opinion it is just best to keep feeding to a minimum. Feed good quality foods with higher quality ingredients as well. They digest much better
