Question

Hello,
We are sorry, but Tom Lee wasn't able to answer your question:

Hi,
I have read and enquired much but still have no real answer;
I have a 12 Gal tank with 2x Black & 2x White Mollies = 2 Pairs (M&F)
2 pairs (M & F) Platties & 2 Pair (M&F) Guppies Total 12 Fish in my tank
All living together as happy as Larry, but I am concerned that I may be overstocked and seek your excellent advice, please
How big does the fish grow each of the three types I have mentioned, and will my tank give a stress free life to all 12 my current pets, living in the size tank.Ps I have noticed some small fish born and soon disappearing as well

Answer
Hi Shane,
  There is no absolute rule as to how many fish can live in a particular -sized tank. It depends on many things, such as the type of fish, the amount of structure in the tank, the kind of filtration, etc.  That said, it sounds to me like you are near the limit, i.e., I would not add any more fish to that tank.   The mollies can reach about 3 inches or so (females get larger than males).  The platties are about the same while the guppies are a little smaller.

 The most important thing is to do regular partial water changes of about 25% once a week, every week, to keep the fishes happy and healthy.
