Question
QUESTION: as I was telling my sister she was fine just a few days ago it hit me!  I had frozen bloodworms thawing for her and I forgot about them a couple hours at least!  Could this be what has happened? did i give her food poisoning?  Can I treat her with something???

ANSWER: Liane, Have you fed her the blood worms from this same package before or is this a new one? Check the expiration date. Fish food can go bad or already bad when you buy them. So she was fine until you feed her the blood worms? How many do you feed her at one time?

QUESTION: Hi Jaymie,
here are the answers to the questions you asked:

first, I ran out of ammonia testers, I will go buy some, but since i just changed the water and it's a 5 gallon I have to assume it's not that...either way I'm gonna get some...
The bloodworms were not a new package I used them before, but it did have a sorta sour-ish smell I assumed I'd never smelled that before because I'd never let them thaw that long...it was a few hours before i remembered...i ran out of them the other night trying to feed her the night i changed the water so i can't check the exp. date  :( they are the cubed kind i would thaw the whole cube feed her a few like 3 then throw the rest away...her behavior is still the same...:( thanks

ANSWER: Unless you are doing complete water changes meaning taking all the water out and replacing it, there could still be ammonia and/or nitrites in the water. I feed my fish the same type of blood worms, meaning the frozen cube. When I first started out keeping Betta fish, I would use a knife and break off chunks. That way, i didn't waste any. They thaw very quickly. The way I do it is I take a little of their aquarium water and heat it up a bit. Then I drop the cube in. By the time I get to the fish room, they are thawed and ready to be fed to the fish. If there was a sour smell then chances are they were bad. She might just have to get passed this on her own. I have never heard of fish getting food poisoning but I don't think it is impossible. Just keep an eye on her. Continue to try and get her to eat. If she does not eat what you give her, remove it so that it doesn't cause other problems. Just keep her warm and quiet. Unfortunately, there really isn't anything you can do since she is not showing visible signs of illness or injury.

QUESTION: hi Jaymie,
she did eat some brine shrimp last night!  This made me so happy, but she is swimming funny. still doing some of the facing downward pose, even though she's doing it from the top of the tank not the bottom...her swimming is crooked??? Her body I'm having a hard time deciding if it looks crooked or not, or if it's just the way she's positioned.  the nitrate test is zero and zero nitrites.  the ammonia test is dysfunctional...yesterday it showed ammonia so i did another partial change only 3/4 gallon...today the test didn't even work! mardel testers... i don't like them, but i couldn't find the ones i do like. I like the way you thaw your cubes i'm gonna do that.  i guess i should try the brine shrimp again since she ate some last night?

Answer
Howdy, It is very important to for me to know if her spine looks crooked or is she is just swimming funny. Fish get tuberculosis and one of the signs is swimming crooked with a bent spine. IF it is that, use gloves when working with the water because it can be transferred to humans. Let me know ASAP if her spine is crooked.
