beta tank

Question
I had heard that it was best for betas to be kept in a tank without a running filter so that the water isn't disturbed. Is this true? Or can I buy a tank with a built-in filter?

Answer
Hi Darlene,
I would like to know the size of the tank you would like to buy with the built in filter.  If you are planning to have your beta in with other fish, then you need a filter.  Filter or no filter, you will have to keep your water very clean, and do water changes often with your beta fish.  A beta likes to blow his nest, and with a filter, it breaks his nest, this is why people say it is better not to have a filter.  It all depends on the size of the tank.  I have seen little one gallon tanks with a built in filter.  If you are talking about this type of tank, then no, you are better to buy the biggest bowl possible, and have no filter.
Hope this helps
