proper feeding for my new jack dempsey

Question
hello, i am nervous about the correct feeding of my new fish: a neon jack dempsey. i was instructed to feed it the typical "as much as it can eat in 2-3 minutes"...this is totally understandable, except he hasn't been eating off the top. this is only the second day i've had him, and he seems hungry because he frequently scavenges the bottom of the tank (i just have the one fish in there). i have Omega One Small Pellets for Cichlids. i have been putting maybe 5-7 pellets in twice a day, and one catfish pellet he picks at on the bottom. am i doing anything wrong?

Answer
Hi Scott,
That sounds about right, except that I would only give him 5-7 pellets once a day at first.  Be sure not to leave food in there that he doesn't eat.  For the first few weeks, he will likely be reluctant to eat because of the new environment and all. As he gets more bold, you can increase his food a little.  Do not overfeed him.  Fish should not be fat, they should always be a little lean and a little hungry and eager to eat.
