Question
There has been a blood bath in the budgie cage and i have had to separate the parents. Hen is on 3 young under a week old .If i return the cock she will kill him. Can she raise them alone

Answer
Hello Dave,

What the male does during the breeding season is feed the female. He also will feed the chicks when they come out of the box (sometimes). Taking him away is a smart idea if she is being that violent with him. For the most part she will be able to raise them on her own. But keep a close eye on her to see if she is struggling or ignoring the chicks or something like that.

Leave the male out for a week and then under very close supervision put him back in. If the female has calmed down a bit and doesn't try to hurt him then it may have just been a "phase". But you may not want to do this if she still seems territorial and aggressive.

You really need to keep a close eye on her while she is doing this alone. My female did this once before and she ended up ok by herself. She was able to raise the chicks on her own. But remember all budgies are different.

Hope this helps!
Thank you for the question!
