Question
QUESTION: I have a male green budgie. I have noticed that he is always puffy. Is that normal?

ANSWER: Fluffing up can sometimes be a means of disguising illness.  For instance, if the bird is losing weight, this behavior will hide it.  Predators tend to prey on the weak, so animals low on the food chain tend to hide weaknesses.

Does he have any signs of illness?
*Eating more or less than normal
*Cloudy, squinty or watery eyes
*Changes in breathing (faster, slower, wheezing)

If you literally mean that he is ALWAYS puffy, it could be nothing.  They sometimes do that when their content.  If he doesn't have other symptoms, he's most likely fine, and just being a unique little bird!

QUESTION: Thank you for your reply. He is not showing any signs of illness. He is eating normal. His eyes look ok. He chrips alot and he will jump on my shoulder when I open his cage.  I was worried because when I looked up puffiness the answers all say he is sick. I am hoping he is not sick. Is there any thing else I should be looking for if he is sick?

Answer
A lot of birds just puff up when they're happy.  If he doesn't have any of the signs I listed for you earlier, he's probably fine.

Other signs to watch for, in case you're still worried, are:
*Sitting on the bottom of the cage
*Refusal or inability to perch
*Losing feathers, or not keeping clean (budgies are little neat freaks)
*Changes in droppings

He's probably just healthy and happy.  The reason sick birds puff themselves out is to act healthy and happy, so they are less likely to be preyed upon in the wild.  Its instinct.

If he's chirping, hopping on your shoulder, and eating normally, those are all good signs!
