Answer
Hi Elaine,

I am on my way back to England this weekend and will look at feeds there that might be suitable in the long run.  The fat deposits are indicative of insulin resistance which is very common in arabs.  Cushings is often found with insulin resistance but necessarily.  It is good that she does not have fat deposits as they would suggest being at risk of another laminitis bought.  I would seriously consider asking your vet to check for cushings just so you know she doesn't have it.  As she has had laminitis in the past she is at risk for getting it again.  In sensitive horses any amount of sugar can cause a problem.  Barley is high in starch and your economy mix may be too.  What brand is that Dobson, Spillers, Baileys etc?

I assume she is getting some exercise if she is 100% stabled.  She will need exercise to keep what muscle she has plus it is very important for horses who have had laminitis to get some form of work even if it is just hand walking for 30 minutes a day.

If you can provide me with amounts by weight that you feed along with the mares approx weight I will be able to give better advice.  You may also want to check out the insulin and cushings yahoo group online.  They have huge amounts of information on dealing with horses with laminitic historys.

Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Clair
