licking the ground

my horse has been pawing at the ground and then licking it. Do you know what he is doing?

Answer
It depends on what might be on the ground. Like if you once had a salt block out there or something then he might be trying to get some salt that might of been left on the ground. You shouldnt worry about it to much, but if he starts to have signs of colic or anything else like that then call your vet. I hope this helps.
