Question
hello, why dont horses vomit when it suffers from food poison? in general tell me, why dont horses vomit

Answer
Hi Rohit,

Thank you for your question.  Horses are incapable of vomiting due to the anatomy/physiology of their digestive tracts.  They have a sphincter at the junction of the esophagus and stomach that does not allow food to flow back up the esophagus once swallowed.  The oblique angle of the attachment of the esophagus and stomach is also said to prevent the backwards flow of food...and some researchers speculate that the muscle lining the esophagus that moves food from the mouth to the stomach only moves in one direction.  All of these put together prevent the horse from vomiting or burping.

Thanks, Corlena
