Question
hello ma'am, why few horses dont even drink water whether it is hot or cold climate? what is the solution for this?

Answer
Hi Rohit,

Horses are very sensitive to water quality, taste, temperature and metal composition...and to changes in all of these.  The old adage "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" comes from some real experience.  There are a few tricks to help encourage water consumption.  First and foremost, ensure that the water quality is as good as you can make it.  Clean and scrub water buckets and troughs daily, especially in hot climates.  Use disinfectants to clean water containers, to kill bacteria and algae, and be sure to rinse them thoroughly.  Then try feeding loose salt to the horse(s) to encourage them to drink.  Feeding 1/8 to 1/4 cup of loose salt per horse per day is perfectly acceptable as long as your horse has continuous access to quality water.  The best way to feed them this much salt is to mix it evenly through their grain.  If you have a horse that travels a lot for shows or races and is reluctant to drink while away from home, use some mild flavor in the water.  Start by adding some Kool-Aid like substance (little quantity) to the water while at home and give your horse 4-7 days to get used to the new taste.  Then take the flavor with you and continue to add it to the water.  This helps mask the taste of the water and will help keep your horse drinking.

Thanks, Corlena
