salt blocks - health issues

Question
hello ma'am. hope salt blocks doesn't lead to health issues in horses especially babies(2 year olds and 3 year olds)?

Answer
Hello Caine,

Thank you for your question.  Salt is an essential nutrient for horses and one that can seldom be over-fed especially when sourced from salt blocks.  In fact, salt blocks may not provide enough salt. You should not be concerned about providing free access to salt blocks.  I often recommend mixing loose salt with other feed to ensure adequate intake.  In any case salt has a built-in intake limiting mechanism that keeps horses from over-consuming it and any salt consumed in easily secreted provided the horse has adequate access to water.

Thanks, Corlena
