Will be hunter horse

Question
Hello! Would it help to know about my horse first? Just in case it would: Skeet is a 17 year old QH gelding (who thinks he's a 9 year old stallion). He was misused and was thrown out labled as "no good". I retired him rodeo and am the only person that can handle/work with him at all. He can't be in hunter lessons because he tries to run over and beat up everyone besides me. He's doing much better now though. He lets people watch him from the fence instead of them having to be in a car. I'm not sure how I could train him to do hunter classes. Any advice on how to get him to stop bucking before, during, and after the jumps, and slow down on the turns would be great since he won't listen to me about those issues. Thanks!! :)

Answer
Hello,
The goal is to start making your horse feel more comfortable. He probably attacks other horses because he is defensive. You can do many things to work on this but number one, when he starts to even think of making a face at another horse get after him-DON'T TRY TO KILL HIM- just get after him. Remember to keep him facing the horse he doesn't like, that will keep him from kicking them. Start on the ground with a small jump between you and the wall of the arena. Send him over the jump and then disengage him (bump the halter and lean and send energy towards his hind end). Then send him back the other way and again, disengage him to a stop- PAUSE- wait, we want him to be able to stand there until he looks bored. Then ask him back the other way, stop again, and wait until he looks bored. You are on the ground teaching him "What do you do when you jump? Relax and take a nap"
Let me know if you hit any issues, sounds like your guy needs some extra help feeling comfortable.
Best Wishes
