wrong age of horse?

Question
I recently rescued a 3yr old gelding.  His teeth and personality would make
you believe he is a youngster.  However, the area on the skull above the eye
that tends to become more concave as a horse ages,  is that of an older
horse.  Have you ever heard of this on a particular breed or younger horse. I
do not know his breed.  Possibly a Friesian cross.  I have asked around an the
only answer I have had was that maybe he was very thin and loss muscle tone
and it show improvement more slowly more so than any other area of the
body.  He is not thin now and looks healthy.  I plan to have the vet out soon,
but the suspense is making me lose sleep!

Answer
Hello Steph,

Well without a picture this is just going to be pure speculation. You could possibly have an Arabian cross because the head shape is dished or concave on them and the eyes are large and wide set. Keep in mind also that genetics plays a role in this also, this gelding could have a look to him that was inherited.

Yes, the possibility of a poor diet could have also played a role and it takes time for a horse to bounce back 100%. I noticed you said recently acquired and I am assuming very recently. If your feeding him and exercising him, its going to take atleast 6 months to get him to fill out nicely. Especially if you acquired him in poor shape. Worms can also wreck havoc on a horse and its important to make sure you keep him on a nice worming rotation.

Without seeing a picture of this guy, I really cant give you my honest opinion. As long as he is eating well, visually seeing well and has stamina I would say that this is just something that comes with him and continue your Vet check up!
