Question
Please help have four years old welsh cob who will not except the bit. He throws his head about and hides in the corner of the stable. He is as happy as larry in his hackamoore but this limits me so much and as hes getting older much stronger in it. Teeth have been checked no problems there .He will have a soft rope in his mouth, plays with the riding crop, but when you show him a bit he goes to pieces. He was very head shy when i had him and we have come a long way any amount of coating bits in sweet stuff just ends up with me getting sticky, any help or tips welcome - i did hear of a leather bit.

Answer
Hi Christine!

Let's break this problem down.   I need more information before I can suggest anything. Is he head shy about everything or is it just his mouth?  Can you worm him?  Can you clip his muzzle, ears or bridle path?  Does he allow the halter taken on and off easily and with no concern?

He is very young and could just be utterly untrained, not so much really scared.  Who broke him and how long ago?  Just how thorough was the breaking process....because it appears there are gaps in his education in the most basic of his ground manners.

This needs to be fixed.  How can one ride him when he has no communication or trust with his human?
