Re-training a horse

Question
Dear Leigh, I was recently given a 16 year old pony that has not been ridden for 4-5 years. In the past it has been a great pony for it's owner (who became to old to ride), apparently never bucked or reared or bit. Was also used to pull a sulky. I want to re-train the pony for myself and my kids. I have only been riding for 2 years and have never previously trained a horse. I am determined to do it myself. Can you give me some ideas about what ground work I should cover first and what to do after that (lungeing, riding). So far I have been getting her used to human touch again, stroking her with the dressage whip, rubbing/grooming her along the neck and wither (further back she gets a bit edgy). Can you recommend any literature of instructive DVDs that could help?

Answer
Hi Andrea, go to my web site and read it, it will give you some good ideas on where to start, I have some other good links you can visit for training tips.  Read a lot and try and understand a horse as much as you can, that will help you and your pony.

good luck

Rick
