Question
Hi, I was wondering how it was best o train my mare to barrel race. What are the rules of this and what should i wear? Do I have to have a barrel racing saddle?

Answer
Hi Betta!

Look up ANYTHING by Martha Josey.  She is the best of the best when it comes to barrel racing.

Depending on how far you want to go in competition, a good barrel saddle will really help you.  They are designed for the sport, are light weight, keep your legs in a good position, don't bind the horse in the loin or shoulder.

In ANY horse sport I concentrate on good horsemanship FIRST.  Any thing can be built on a good foundation.  I spend my time in the round pen making sure my work there is top shelf, my horses understand everything SLOW first.  I know I can always add speed later.  If it is right and correct slow fast happens naturally.  If it is not right slow fast can never happen.

As far as rules, check with the association you will be riding with.  I know that AQHA is a bit different that most rodeo associations.  I did not compete in barrel stuff, I only watched friends at AQHA shows.  We only did enough to get our third category for the All-Around.  Again, Martha Josey is the best in the World at the barrels.  I would look to her for great advice.

Clothing I can do!!  Go to your favorite western wear store.  They have so many cute shirts, it will be hard for you to choose!  A cute shirt and jeans, good boots and a hat and girl, you are ready to go.  Glam it up with some sparkle in a belt or on your shirt.  SWEET!

The serious work of the barrel pattern is bet left to others that have more experience in it than me!

Let me know how it is going!  If  you have horsemanship issues, anything other than the barrel pattern, I'll be happy to help!

Smiles and Miles!  Denise
