Box walking

Question
I have just bought a gorgeous 4 year old mare 15.2. She has not long been
broken and is doing very well and seems very quick to learn.
However she box walks for England and although this has improved now she
has settled with a horse next door that she can see as soon as you take the
other horse away or she is left on her own it starts with  a vengeance. If I tie
her up she then paws the ground non stop.
She is not bored and goes out every day on her own if possible.
I want to try and stop this, as once she has finished her training she will be
living on her own with me. I have just ordered a stable mirror but do you have
any other things I can try. I suspect the people selling her knew she had this
problem but as she is so young can I stop it?
Many thnaks

Answer
Hello,
Sounds like she is a little nervous to be alone! That is totally normal for a gregarious animal! The more you work with her on the ground and make it clear to her that you two are a herd and you are the leader of that herd the more comfortable she will feel. For a prey animal to be alone is a serious problem, all her instincts know that she is more likely to be hunted when she is alone. If you are taking her home to live with you alone you may think of getting a companion animal. If another horse is out of the question you may look into a small goat. I like my horses to have buddies, though I do know some horses who live alone and do quite well.
