Question

azaria
Hi
I have an exmoor mare and When I first got her, i had her on a trial and used her previos tack which she was really good in, she would put her head in when she was standing still, walking, cantering and trot was almost there but when we bought her we had to get her new tack but when we wennt to get her tack they didnt have the same bit she had in before (french link full cheek) so we got her the nearest thing possible(Full cheek snaffle) when we tried it on her the next day she hated it and she was yanking around even when i was holding the buckle at the end so we went to a different tack shop the next day to get her old bit but when i rode her in it the next day she was still yanking about and acting like it was the full cheek snaffle, now (a month later) she is still like it and all her schooling has dissapered.
the pictre i have attached is before
I dont no what to do
I am 12 so i am sorry if i have done anything wrong

Answer
Hi Ellie,

Your question is very common and occurs often with less experienced owners.

What has happened is that your pony for whatever reason didn't like the full cheek snaffle (have you had her teeth checked?) perhaps she's always been ridden in a french link and it scared her?

But regardless of the reason, she reacted negatively to the bit and got away with it.  It's the magic of ponies to grab with all 4 hoofs any negative (to us) behaviour that is not immediately corrected.

I think that from what you described your problem is beyond anything anyone here can tell you as there are just so many variables.

I suggest you find a good trainer and have a few lessons.  The teacher can show you how to correct your pony and stop the behaviour from happening again.  This will also get your pony's training back on track.

Regards,
Leigh
