Question
hi...

im trainging up this minature shetland and was wondering if anybody could give me some simple tips and ways of going about it.
Hes a gelding, really calm in his stable and in the paddock, and pretty simple to catch, but when leading him out of the feild he a bit hyper and excited he even trys to kick out and buch. i try handling him as much as i can and spend most of my time with him.

i just want to be able to make him sensible enough to be able for these young children to lead and for be to be able to lunge him without him kicking out at me or getting over excited he about 5.All my otha minatures are fine and have been able for children as young as 3 lead them and i have all trained them myself, but yet not none of them has been as bad as him.

If you have any tips or gestures please say..i just dont Know what to do,some one even said breaking him in and then try handling so hes more warn out when it comes to handling and leading...? but would breaking him in for a small child work ?

Answer
Hi there, Being a person that has other ponies Im sure you have tried this before but I would say he is just being silly coming out of the paddock in anticipation of what he is going to do, give him a little jerk on the lead when he gets to out of control leading them take him somewhere strange like the back yard or somewhere and just tie him to a tree or something and walk away. Make sure he is safe from getting his feet hooked up but little ponies can't do too much damage when they throw a tantrum. Personally I would just leave him there for an hour maybe two so he can just learn some patience. This may take a few days but once he learns to just settle it should show in his allround behavior. If he is being really naughty try not to get flustered yourself or this will encourage him more.
Hope I have been some help. Karen.
