Question
Hi there,i recently bought a 15h coloured gelding who was born in 2006 He was supposedly backed but when we have gone to get on him he is swinging his bum towards us and bucking. He also displays aggressive head nods and shakes when he sees a saddle or when you try to put anything on his back, even rugs, yet he is very good to handle in any other way. When we lunge him he is fine to walk and trot but when asked for canter, gets very fizzy and growls. We have free schooled him and he tries to run at us and rears and bucks,He has gradually got worse do you have any suggestions. We have owned him for about two months now,and cannot contact previous owners.

Answer
Hi Rosemarie,

I would get your vet to do a thorough physical on him and rule out a pain cause for his behaviour, make sure he's been gelded properly.

I would also recommend a Natural Horsemanship practitioner to come out and help you to get to the bottom of this behaviour, as it sounds like he's testing you but to a very extreme level.  A NH teacher will help you to sort out his aggressiveness.

It sounds to me like he's not been gelded properly, and is displaying very dominant/stallion characteristics.  Without seeing him, this is my best guess.

Hope this has helped, and good luck, hope you get to the bottom of the problem.
