Head tossing horse...

Question
I have never see any horse just keep tossing their head all the time, mostly when she sees someone coming towards her...

My worry is that she may injure herself..

And concerned that she may have something wrong with her and how can I help her?

She is a retired race horse, and I am not familiar with the temperments and habits of race horses?  So she is really new territory..

What should I do to help my mare? Can her constant head tossing be stopped?

Answer
Hello Roxanne,

First off let me apologize for my delayed response and thank you for your question.

If your mare if doing the head tossing in the stall I would say she is doing this out of boredom or she has gotten use to getting fed and treated in her stall and is shaking her head out of excitement. If it is boredom you can get balls and empty milk jugs and hang the toys from the ceiling for her to play with.

Also check the horses ears for ear mites. You can treat ear mites yourself with over the counter treatments you can get at your local farm store (tractor supply ect.)

I hope this helps the both of you out.
